Elderly homeowners bear the brunt of bad weather

The number of home insurance claims from elderly property owners has increased considerably over the past few weeks, statistics from Age UK Enterprises show.

It revealed that in December 2010, it dealt with 391 per cent more house-related claims than in the same period just 12 months earlier.

Meanwhile, escape of water claims increased by 247 per cent over the course of the year.

Gordon Morris, managing director of Age UK Enterprises, said: "While at last the weather is becoming milder, the legacy of this winter's extreme cold continues as homeowners are left to repair the damage caused."

He pointed out that anyone who may be concerned about the condition of their property needs to take action before it is too late.

Provisional statistics from the Met Office show that last month was the coldest December seen in the UK since records began back in 1910.ADNFCR-1789-ID-800368996-ADNFCR
