Elderly people who may be struggling to keep up with their mortgage or home insurance payments could be the society sector most at risk from fuel poverty, it has been claimed.
National Energy Action (NEA) claims that they are most at risk from fatalities and health-related problems, even though only 50 per cent of the fuel-poor population are elderly.
Any households with a disabled member of the family may also be affected as they have much greater need for warmth and may be less mobile.
Maria Wardrobe, warm homes campaigner for the NEA, said: "It does really cut across all sectors of society and everyone suffers health effects from living in a cold home."
According to statistics from the organisation, the average annual fuel bill in the UK is £1,287 which is an increase of £715 or 125 per cent since January 2003.
