Energy-saving light bulbs could lower utility bills

Homeowners who invest in energy-saving light bulbs could find their utilities bills start to fall, one group has suggested.

As production of traditional 60-watt light bulbs is set to cease at the end of August, Friends of the Earth has stressed the benefits of switching to low-energy alternatives.

"They last around ten times longer than wasteful old-style bulbs and use three quarters less energy to produce the same amount of light," explained Friends of the Earth's senior waste campaigner Michael Warhurst.

He emphasised that the bulbs have dropped in price over recent years, which means it makes even more sense for people to invest in them, bearing in mind how quickly electricity costs are rising.

This follows comments from Consumer Focus, which highlighted that many homeowners are already becoming concerned over how they will foot winter energy bills.

E.ON recently announced that it would be increasing the price of gas by 18.1 per cent, electricity by 11.4 per cent and 15.2 per cent for dual-fuel packages.ADNFCR-1789-ID-800700982-ADNFCR
