Extensions 'need to be covered by home insurance'

Anyone planning an extension is being advised to check their home insurance policy before embarking on building work.

Writing the Independent, sector commentator Alessia Horwich stressed that families planning to increase the size of their property should ensure that their current home insurance policy will cover any potential damage to the building, as well as to neighbouring properties.

It is also vital to ensure that once the building work is completed, the home insurance policy covers the increased space and value.

Extending is generally regarded as a good option for those people who are looking for more room but are worried about moving properties during the current economic climate.

Miles Shipside, commercial director at online estate agent rightmove.co.uk, told the publication that extensions could add up to 75 per cent of the cost on to the total value of the property.

He added: "In the majority of extensions, you won't get all your money back, but you'll have the benefit of a better house."

The British Insurance Brokers Association recently called on the government to increase awareness among homeowners about the need to have home insurance in place to protect against possible flood damage.
