Statistics have revealed that fewer people are now taking out travel insurances and jetting across the Atlantic for a holiday.
Released by the US Travel Association, figures show that overseas travel into the US fell by eight per cent in January 2009.
As a result, there have been calls for the US government to introduce a travel promotion programme which will encourage holidaymakers to head stateside and give the country's economy a vital boost.
Roger Dow, president and chief executive officer of the US Travel Association, said: "As any business will tell you, tough economic times demand increased investment in attracting customers.
He added: "Increasing travel to the United States is the most efficient form of economic stimulus."
InsureandGo recently warned that holidaymakers who are refused entry into the US because they do not have a visa will not be covered by travel insurance.
