Businesses have been urged to ensure that they are prepared for winter weather so that they do not have to make a claim on their insurance policies.
According to Norwich Union, when companies are closed down over the festive period burst water pipes can be a "big concern" and precautions should be taken to avoid this problem.
The insurance firm advises businesses to keep their heating systems switched on to stop pipes from bursting and causing water damage.
Allister Smith, Norwich Union's property risk manager, said: "Failure to conduct basic preventative measures before shutting down for Christmas, particularly if there is a cold snap, can potentially lead to thousands of pounds worth of damage."
He also advises companies to repair dripping taps and examine the insulation on pipes and tanks.
Last week, Direct Line revealed that people are more likely to have a fire in their home in December, with insurance claims being 61 per cent higher than the summer months.
