The winners of a competition aimed at tackling the problem of building homes on flood plains have been announced.
Launched by Norwich Union and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the competition asked entrants to design a family home and garden to form part of a residential development situated on a flood plain.
The four winning companies, which include London based Nissen Adams LLP and Hopper Howe Sadler from Newcastle, had to make sure the design would be liveable and could be suitably insured.
Sunand Prasad, RIBA president, said: "Good design lies at the heart of creating communities that are more resilient against flooding, of lessening the cost caused by flooding when it does occur and of minimising the impact it has on local livelihoods and safety."
The British Insurance Brokers Association recently called for the government to play its part in making sure homes are protected against floods so that insurers can provide effective cover for homes.
