Flood risk 'an important factor' when choosing a house

Anyone in search of a new property needs to assess its flood risk, as this can have a significant bearing on home insurance, an expert has said.

There is a growing need for a flood management strategy to be implemented, otherwise some properties run the risk of becoming uninsurable, suggested Malcolm Tarling, media relations officer at the Association of British Insurers.

"We've commissioned independent research that shows the implications of rising sea levels will put many more properties at risk in the UK," he explained, adding that the Environment Agency has also issued similar warnings.

It believes that there will be a considerable rise in the number of properties at risk of flooding over the next 20 years as the situation worsens in the UK.

Figures from Lloyds TSB Insurance recently showed that one in eight people (13 per cent) are now affected by weather damage to their homes.ADNFCR-1789-ID-800327356-ADNFCR
