Freezing water 'makes home insurance claims soar'

It has been estimated that up to £40 million worth of home insurance claims have been made over the past few days due to the icy weather in the UK.

AA Insurance believes that many homeowners have been hit with bursting pipes and roof tanks as the chilly conditions caused water to freeze and expand, in turn, causing damage to properties.

Although the insurance firm states that 'escape of water' claims on home insurance always peak in the winter months, this year's cold snap has seen the number of calls soar.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said: "This year's big freeze is a reminder that burst pipes can cause serious water damage to both buildings and contents such as carpets and furniture.

The snowy weather has also hit motorists hard, according to the AA, as one of the firm's call centres experienced a 30 per cent increase in the number of car insurance claims on Monday morning.
