Garages could help cars retain their value

Motorists may be less likely to make a claim on their car insurance by keeping their vehicle stored away in a garage, Manheim Auctions has suggested.

The company found that 55 per cent of motorists do not keep their car in a garage, leaving it exposed to the elements and the possibility of accidental damage.

Craig Mailey, marketing director at Manheim Auctions, emphasised that where a car is kept may seem trivial, but it can have a variety of benefits.

"Paint weathers so keeping it inside a garage will help to protect it, and if a car is parked outside there's always the opportunity for it to be exposed to accidental knocks and scrapes," the expert commented.

It was recently found by the Institute of Advanced Motorists that men are generally more reckless drivers than women, which may help explain why they face higher car insurance premiums.ADNFCR-1789-ID-800578370-ADNFCR
