Get your car ready for the winter roads

Car insurance customers need to prepare their car for the cold winter months, when the easy conditions of the summer are replaced with wet roads, slippery leaves and poor visibility.

Car tyres are one aspect that Car insurance customers need to focus on, with a recent study by Kwik Fit finding that people's attitudes to their wheels vary greatly. The study looked at different people's approaches to their wheels, finding that their personality affects the tyres they opt for.

Almost 60 per cent of drivers say they are thrifty and so tend to choose non-branded tyres from the cheapest quote they can get, while a further 72 per cent see themselves as a thrill seeker and so plump for high-performance tyres.

However, David White, customer services director at Kwik-Fit, said that price and performance should not be the main priority. "The number one priority for motorists should always be to make sure their tyres are in good condition. Motorists should ensure that their tyres have sufficient tread depth and are inflated to the correct levels, especially as we head into the winter months, when road conditions are tricky."

The Retail Motor Industry Federation also issued advice for Car insurance customers in the winter, saying they should check their fuel levels and weather forecasts before heading out in the winter months. Other tips from the organisation include changing anti-freeze, as it warns that old liquids can cause deterioration of the corrosion inihibitors.

Packing an emergency kit is another piece of advice for Car insurance customers, so if they do break down they have sufficient supplies until help reaches them. The ideal pack would contain a torch and spare batteries, a first-aid kit, blankets and warm clothes and rope, in case the vehicle needs towing.
