Halifax: Avoid winter weather home insurance claims

There is likely to be severe weather in the UK this winter, which means people may want to take steps to ensure their houses are protected so they can avoid making a claim on their home insurance.

Halifax states that it handled 30,000 windstorm damage claims last year, which cost over £17 million to repair.

A further £43 million was spent fixing 20,000 cases of burst and frozen pipes.

David Rochester, from Halifax home insurance, said: "With home emergencies, prevention is certainly better than the cure, and much of the damage could be avoided if householders spent a small amount of time preparing for the bad weather."

The insurance company recommends checking the condition of the roof on a property and making sure the pipes are clear of leaves and debris.

AXA recently revealed that many Britons are under-insuring the contents of their homes.
