Halifax tells the UK to protect its homes

Halifax is urging home owners to be ready for bad weather by taking steps to protect their properties.

The insurance company says some simple preparations can help avoid people having to make a claim on their home insurance.

According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), the flooding in England last summer cost about £3 billion for insurance companies.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager for Halifax home insurance, said that the cost of storm damage claims can often run into thousands of pounds.

"It certainly makes sense for homeowners to take whatever preventative steps they can at this stage to reduce the risk of damage to their homes," he added.

To help protect property Halifax suggests securing potentially hazardous objects such as garden furniture, clearing debris from gutters and cutting back low-hanging branches.

For homes at risk of flooding it suggests moving furniture upstairs, unplugging electrical items and using sandbags to help prevent water entering the property.

According to the ABI there are over two million homes at risk of flooding in the UK. It says having insurance means homeowners can minimise the financial cost of the damage caused.
