Bike insurance customers can now benefit from targeted advice and guidance geared towards helping them to choose the right kind of helmet.
When out on the road this bank holiday, protection and road safety are the top priority as large numbers of people are bound to head out to make the most of the weekend.
All the necessary information is easily available through a one-click access gleaned from a road safety awareness website recently launched by the Department for Transport.
Mike Penning, minister for road safety, inaugurated the Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme (SHARP) site that has analysed the protection provided by 27 new bike helmets.
Motorcycle riders can now see for themselves how SHARP carries out its tests to check whether a helmet is safe or not. They can also access helpful guidelines to ensure that they can obtain a proper fit when shopping for new protective gear.
Mr Penning said: "By making sure that motorcyclists have access to the best safety information, promoting further training and safe riding, and reminding drivers to look out for bikers I hope that we can improve safety for motorcyclists and reduce the number of tragedies we see on the roads each year."
A recent survey carried out by Saga Motorcycle Insurance found that an overwhelming 97 per cent of experienced biker believed that car drivers were ignorant and aggressive towards motorcyclists on the roads.
Data published by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents indicates that motorcycling accounts for 19 per cent of casualties on British roads. However, motorcycles account for only one per cent of the total traffic in Britain.
Statistics further show that head injuries are responsible for killing 80 per cent of bike riders involved in an accident, while 70 per cent of serious injuries also involved the head. |
