A number of unusual home insurance claims have been highlighted by one firm to highlight the importance of having adequate cover.

NFU Mutual has told the tale of how one homeowner with a swimming pool in their garden fell asleep one afternoon, only to awake with a herd of cows in their back yard.

Much of the man's garden furniture was destroyed and one of the confused cattle was taking a dip in the water.

Lindsay Sinclair, chief executive of NFU Mutual, said: "The reason for highlighting these unusual claims is to remind people of the need to regularly review their home insurance to make sure it would fully protect the contents of their homes, garages and gardens."

In order to save money during the economic downturn, many Brits are becoming more self sufficient and choosing to grow their own vegetables and even rear chickens, a survey conducted by Egg.com revealed.
