One in 10 Brits who own holiday homes do not have proper insurance cover for the contents of their property, new research by Zurich has found.
More than £6.3 billion worth of belongings are being left in second homes across the UK as two thirds of people said they personally visit no more than every three months.
However, although many believe the risk of theft is greater when they are absent, it has actually been found that a break-in is twice as likely when the home is occupied.
Head of Zurich Private Clients Mike Brabham said people often 'let their guard down' as they relax on holiday.
"We need to ensure that we don't compromise on security or cover, leaving our property vulnerable and thousands of pounds of our possessions at risk," he added.
Instead of buying holiday houses some people are now home swapping. Those wanting to get away can offer to exchange houses for a period of time with someone in their desired holiday destination, the Telegraph reported this week.
Anyone wanting to do this must to inform their insurer and have full home and contents cover.
