When it comes to insuring properties, those with holiday homes need to purchase a "specialist policy", according to the British Insurance Brokers Association (Biba).
Biba technical and corporate affairs executive Graeme Trudgill said Britons with property abroad should consider opting for a specialist insurance policy which caters for homes that are left empty for long periods of time.
According to a recent study by Zurich, the average holiday home has contents worth around £15,200, with over 60 per cent of people visiting their second homes just once every three months.
"It is very likely that if it is an actual stand alone property then you have got a considerable amount of contents there that will add up to this kind of money. It is really important to get insurance for it," Mr Trudgill added.
The most recent government figures from 2005/2006 revealed that 211,000 British households have second homes abroad.
