Holidaymakers are being urged to ensure they have adequate travel insurance as the average family's luggage is worth thousands of pounds, it has been reported.
Legal & General calculated that a family of two adults and two children takes luggage worth £3,465 with them on their vacation.
Even a single person taking a long weekend break will carry an average of £1,375 worth of goods in their suitcase, it has been claimed.
Elaine Parkes, head of technical services at the general insurance operations of Legal & General, said that up to 200,000 passengers a month travelling from the UK have lost their luggage in the past two years.
To ensure holidaymakers have a relaxing time, Ms Parkes advocated that people "check their cover every time they plan to go away, regardless of how far or for how long".
According to figures from the Air Transport Users Council, British Airways mislaid more luggage per flight than any other in Europe last year.
