Travel insurance customers are looking far-a-field for exotic and cheap winter holiday breaks, it has been revealed.
According to online travel company Expedia, a number of Asian cities in particular may be relatively expensive to get to but offer a wide range of experiences at relatively little cost once holidaymakers arrive.
The comments come following an announcement from luxury carrier Etihad Airways that the company will open new routes to Nagoya and Tokyo in the first quarter of 2010 - a move which will bring to eight the number of destinations served by the company in the Far East.
Etihad already flies to Beijing, Jakarta, Manila, Singapore, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.
Jonathan Cudworth, director of product management at Expedia for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, believes there are many opportunities to enjoy city breaks on a budget.
"Look at trying to get city passes. A lot of major cities do these where you can get free or discounted access to museums and various events and activities," he said.
"Bangkok is very popular - it is expensive to get to but once you are there then it is easy and cheap to eat out and go out and enjoy yourselves."
He added that prices for flights to Asia and are much lower than last year and Brits are increasingly looking to take advantage of this as they try to maximise their holiday experience and minimise the cost.
Mr Cudworth went on to say that travellers are also cutting down on the length of time they spend in one place.
"A well organised traveller can see most cities in a couple of days so definitely, there has been some shortening in the length of stay," he explained.
Earlier this month, Hotels.com published its price index for January to June 2009, which indicated that Hong Kong is the most popular Asian city to visit among US travellers, with Tokyo in second place.
