People going on adventure holidays or trips that involve dangerous sports have been warned they are "crazy" not to get travel insurance.
Endsleigh Insurance has said that it is "vital" to get insurance but added the credit crunch means many people are taking risks and leaving home without proper cover.
Everyone is equally at risk from accidents but reciprocal health arrangements from the NHS do not always provide protection when abroad.
John Boyles, account manager at Endsleigh Insurance, said: "Even if you are taking a shorter trip than you normally would, or you are staying in Europe rather than going worldwide, you absolutely should travel with travel insurance."
He also said that when adrenaline or extreme sports are part of the holiday, extra care needs to been taken as potential costs for anyone involved in an accident can be "enormous".
According to figures by American Express, one in four people travel abroad without travel insurance.
