Brits should ensure they are pack a first aid kit when going on holiday and ensure they take out a travel insurance policy, it has been suggested.
Jacqui Jedrzejewski of NHS Direct said holidaymakers should take a first aid kit away with them, rather than relying on foreign pharmacies where staff may not speak English.
Ms Jedrzejewski recommended that people pack basic medication such as plasters, scissors, laxatives and re-hydration solutions.
"If you have an existing medical condition, make sure you take a written note of your condition and the medication you are taking for it," she added.
Keeping medication in its original packaging is also recommended.
Those travelling within the European Union (EU) are advised to apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from their local Post Office. EHICs provide Brisish holidaymakers with free of low-cost medical treatment in a majority of EU countries.
Figures released by the Civil Aviation Authority revealed that 241 million passengers travelled through British airports in 2007.
