Home insurance accidental claims 'on the rise'

New figures revealed that the number of clams for accidental damage in the home increased during the first quarter of the year.

The home insurance provider Greenbee confirmed that it has seen a 25 per cent increase in the number of home insurance claims compared to the same period in 2008. In particular, there has been a rise in laptop related claims caused by split drinks. Claims also involved damage to carpets, televisions and iPods.

James Furse, managing director of Greenbee stressed the need for homeowners to make sure their home insurance policy meets their needs and that accidental damage could be a vital add-on.

He explained: "Having home insurance which offers accidental damage cover as standard can help ensure the most accident-prone home owner may be left simply rueing the incident rather than the bill for an uncovered incident."

Last week, the British Insurance Brokers Association called for changes to be made to the government's flood bill to encourage more home insurance customers are protected against damage.
