Home insurance claims 'increase following burst water pipes'

Home insurance may be even more important to those people who have fitted extra insulation in their lofts, it has been discovered.

NFU Mutual states that there has been an increase in the number of claims made due to pipse and tanks in loft spaces bursting in the currently icy weather.

The firm says that this can cause terrible damage for homeowners as ceilings can collapse, ruining furniture, electrical goods and personal possessions.

Therefore it is advisable to turn off any unnecessary water supplies if a property is unoccupied.

Richard Pilkington, claims manager at the company, said: "When pipes rest above the insulation they become exposed to the cold and this is why they're freezing."

Country properties can often be more at risk because they are not as sheltered as urban homes.

Last month, Legal and General encouraged people to ensure that essential maintenance work is carried out on their homes to avoid unnecessary Home insurance claims.
