Residents of Elmbridge are being warned to ensure they are protected against the recent rise in thefts from gardens.
According to the Elmbridge Community Safety Partnership, thefts from garages and sheds have increased dramatically over the past two months with an increase of 53 per cent compared to the same period in 2008, reports the Elmbridge Guardian.
The majority of items stolen include tools, cycles and gardening equipment - things that could be covered by home insurance policies.
It is hoped that a new leaflet providing information on basic security will help encourage homeowners to ensure their possessions are adequately covered and thieves are deterred.
Peter Kipps, the partnership's manager, said: "Hopefully residents will find the information contained in the leaflets useful in helping to stem the increase in this crime."
Meanwhile, homeowners are being advised by Halifax home insurance to check they have renewed their home insurance ahead of Wimbledon, as many wannabe tennis fans tend to cause accidental damage as they practise their backhand indoors.
