Home insurance customers 'could save money with new energy rules'

Home insurance customers may find that their energy bills are reduced following the introduction of new minimum standards.

To ensure that only energy efficient products are sold in the European market, mandatory energy labelling will enable customers to choose the most environmentally friendly items for their homes.

It is thought that these measures could help to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the UK by around two million tonnes a year, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Lord Hunt, Defra minister for sustainability said: "I'm delighted that the EU has joined together to save consumers money and help save significant amounts of energy and carbon dioxide emissions by introducing these minimum standards."

In order to save money during the recession, many homeowners are now taking steps to make their house more environmentally friendly, according to npower.
