Home insurance customers reduce structural plans, claims survey

There has been a decline in the number of homeowners across the UK who are planning to make structural changes to their properties over the next 12 months.

According to Sainsbury's Home Insurance, around 3.2 million people intend to carry out some form of major structural renovations - some 39 per cent less than in 2008.

The three most popular changes include loft conversions, side extensions and garage extensions, with the average amount to be spent totalling £22,730 per household.

However, Sainsbury's Home Insurance is advising those who are planning to make such changes to their home to contact their Home Insurance provider to make sure they are covered for the increase in value to their property that the improvements may bring.

Joanne Mallon, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, explained: "Buildings insurance premiums are calculated based on a number of factors, such as the type of house or the number of bedrooms it has, so creating extra rooms can have an impact on your premium."

Last week, the Independent recommended that anyone planning to increase the size of their property should ensure that their current Home Insurance policy will cover any potential damage.
