Home insurance may be more important than ever this December as it has been discovered that people are more likely to have a fire in their house during the winter.

Research by Direct Line found that in number of fire claims it received in December 2007 was 61 per cent higher than an average summer month in 2008.

The safest time for houses regarding household fires was found to be either July or August, as only six per cent of annual fire claims were received at these times.

Andrew Lowe, head of Direct Line Home insurance, said it is "essential that all householders work to minimise fire risks in the home" as there are over 45,000 house fires every year "causing millions of pounds worth of damage coupled with the risk of death and injury".

Homeowners are encouraged to make sure the contents of their home are properly protected as the average kitchen is worth £2,299, AXA found.
