Home insurance may not cover cash

People may find that their home insurance policy will not reimburse them for cash stolen from their property, Defaqto has warned.

The independent research company emphasised that this is particularly important at this time of year as homeowners think of buying Christmas gifts for their friends and family.

A survey of the market found that 26 per cent of home insurance policies provide under £500 of cover for cash left in the home.

Meanwhile, four per cent of policies will not offer any level of financial protection, leaving people vulnerable should the money go missing.

"Burglaries increase during the winter months with the long dark evenings and it's important that you check that you've got adequate cover in case you become a victim," advised Mike Powell, Defaqto's general insurance analyst.

NFU Mutual recently suggested that claims for malicious damage could rise considerably as the longer nights draw in.ADNFCR-1789-ID-800228212-ADNFCR
