Home insurance 'may not cover damage caused by vermin'

Homeowners are being advised to look after their property as damage caused by vermin may not be covered by their home insurance policies.

The British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) has warned that houses which are unoccupied for significant periods of time are at risk of becoming infested by rodents.

Peter Staddon, head of technical services at the organisation, suggested that people send in a cleaning team to rid a home of food which attracts rats and mice.

"If they come in they can start chewing up wires and that damage may not be covered under an insurance contract," he added.

It could also be a good idea for homeowners to assess their property and then speak to their home insurance provider about anything which could cause potential losses.

Meanwhile, the British Crime Survey has recently revealed that burglary rates in the UK are up, with figures rising by four per cent between July and September last year.
