Home insurance may not cover outdoor possessions

Items kept in the garden may not be protected by home insurance policies, research from Defaqto has revealed.

The group found that although 52 per cent of contents policies offer protection for plants in the garden, only 21 per cent will pay out £2,500 or more.

Furthermore, 88 per cent of home insurance providers will protect contents that are left out in the open, yet just 16 per cent offer in excess of £2,500 of cover.

"Many items will be brought out and kept in the garden, such as garden furniture, parasols, barbeques, outdoor heating, children's toys and outside lighting," explained Mike Powell, Defaqto's insight analyst for general insurance.

He added that in some cases, people will be investing in expensive new plants and trees, which may not be protected by their home insurance.

As a result, the group highlighted that people need to check the small print of their policies before investing in any expensive outdoor equipment or plants.ADNFCR-1789-ID-800498615-ADNFCR
