Home insurance news: Biba raises flood bill concerns

The British Insurance Brokers Association (Biba) has called on the government to make changes to the draft flood bill in order to ensure better protection for home insurance customers.

Responding to an ongoing consultation on the bill, Biba believes that many householders could be put at risk if they live in areas with a history of flooding.

In particular, the association claims that an awareness campaign, aimed at highlighting the need for people to take out home insurance with appropriate flood insurance, should be put in place so that people are well equipped if the worst should happen.

Eric Galbraith, Biba's chief executive, said: "The problem of flooding is not going away and the government must listen to insurance brokers who are at the sharp end helping people to rebuild their lives after the devastation that flood brings."

The AA recently warned people not to be tempted to reduce their home insurance cover in order to save money during the economic climate as it could prove more costly in the long run.
