Home insurance policies 'in need of regular checks'

People need to frequently look at their home insurance policies to ensure they are offering the level of cover they need.

Some policies will give a specific upper limit on items that are stored in the house, which people may exceed without realising, indicated Mike Powell, insight analyst for general insurance at Defaqto.

"If you are going to be buying expensive gifts over the Christmas period and you might need more than £1,000, you need to ensure you have the correct cover," he explained.

Mr Powell highlighted that consumers need to realise that not all home insurance policies are the same, which is something Defaqto is trying to promote.

In many cases, people presume that items will be covered, which in reality may not be the case, he added.

Recent Defaqto research shows that nine in ten home insurance policies provide temporary increases in cover to protect contents for special events such as Christmas.ADNFCR-1789-ID-800254746-ADNFCR
