A home insurance provider is advising households to ensure they have the adequate protection in place as figures reveal an increase in burglaries during the summer months.
Halifax believes that having unlimited contents and buildings cover could play a key role in offsetting the impact of being a victim of crime, especially as Home Office figures show that burglaries have increased by four per cent for the second quarter in a row.
Figures from the financial services provider also show that crime can rise in the summer months as people become less cautious as temperatures rise.
The company estimated that 22 per cent of homeowners do not lock windows or doors while they are at home.
Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager, said: "When it's warm outside people often leave windows and doors open to keep cool, but many don't realise that burglaries often happen while homeowners are at home."
The Home Office recently launched a new advice pack to help people reduce the risk of burglary.
