People may want to ensure their home insurance is up-to-date and providing adequate cover following new statistics from the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
The organisation has revealed that the cost of fire damage in 2008 rose too a new record high of £1.3 billion an increase of 16 per cent.
Of this, £408 million was as a result of fire damage to homes, which was up by 17 per cent on the previous year.
Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health at the ABI, said: "These are alarming figures. They highlight both the importance of fire insurance and reducing and managing the fire risk."
He also explained that arson tends to increase during an economic downturn, which he describes as being "a worrying trend".
If Brits check their home insurance and discover they need to update their policy, Sainsbury's has warned people not to be too hasty in making a decision on their provider.
