Home insurance 'should extend to garden items'

Those who like to sit and enjoy their garden may want to take extra care to ensure their home insurance covers any items they keep outside.

A poll conducted by Halifax home insurance found that last year, garden theft increased by 63 per cent over the summer months.

The cost of replacing stolen items also went up by 12 per cent to £433.00, in-house claims data from the insurer shows.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager for Halifax home insurance, said: "We'd advise people to check that their home insurance policy protects against theft from the garden and we'd also recommend making life as difficult as possible for the opportunist garden thief."

London was found to be the garden theft hotspot in the UK, followed by Richmond and Twickenham, with Grimsby coming in third.

According to esure, if homeowners keep their vehicle stored in a garage, they may be able to reduce the cost of their car insurance policy.
