The growing number of home-based workers across the UK is having an impact on home insurance policies.

home insurance provider Aviva has confirmed that it will now provide cover for business equipment as a standard part of its policies to reflect that more than one million people currently work from home at least one day a week.

Julie Fromant, home lifestyle manager at Aviva UK , explained that a quarter of the population are likely to be spending one day a week at home working by 2020 as companies realise the benefits of flexible work practices - especially those looking to balance family commitments with work duties.

"We recognise the growing trend in home working and that for many, working from home requires additional investments that need to be protected," she added.

Meanwhile, the Association of British Insurers is urging consumers not to reduce their home insurance cover in order to save money, as they could risk being underinsured if the worst was to happen.
