New research suggests that over 50s should ensure they have adequate home insurance cover - especially during the month of June.
Saga home insurance claims that June 6th is the day of the year when they have the highest level of reported home burglaries due to many people taking advantage of holidays outside of the traditional school vacation times.
Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman of the Saga Group, explained: "If people are going away for a fortnight or just popping out for the evening, they should always check their property is as safe and secure as possible."
He added that taking simple security measures could deter the "the opportunistic thief and could save the distress of returning to a ransacked home".
According to the Home Office, many burglaries take place in just five minutes, with thieves managing to break in, steal and leave the property in this time.
Recent figures from Saga highlighted that 25 per cent of people over the age of 50 would prefer to retire in the country rather than the city.
