Home insurance 'vital for tennis fans'

The world's most famous tennis tournament begins this week but tennis fans are being warned to check their home insurance cover is up to date.

According to Halifax home insurance, many wannabe players get rather too keen to show off their tennis skills while watching at home and this can lead to a rise in home insurance claims for broken windows during the two-week sporting event.

The home insurance provider estimate that claims for accidental damage increased by around a third during June compared to January.

Head of underwriting for Halifax home insurance, David Rochester said: "We'd advise any budding Murrays and Sharapovas to take care when playing ball sports close to home, and check they are insured for accidental damage should a mishap occur."

Meanwhile, the Association of British Insurers has raised concerns that a quarter of households are opting to lower or cancel their home insurance cover in order to reduce their annual expenditure without realising the full implications.
