Homeowners urged to save money by going green

People who are trying to save money because of the credit crunch are being advised that they can help the environment and cut back on their fuel bills.

Friends of the Earth (FOE) claims that doing simple things, such as turning off light switches and using energy saving bulbs, can reduce bills as gas and electricity become increasingly expensive.

Marie Reynolds, a spokesperson for FOE, said: "The credit crunch and escalating fuel prices needn't stop people from going green. In fact, there are savings to be made right from the word 'go'."

She also advised homeowners to think about long-term solutions such as updating boilers and insulating lofts which can "cut fuel bills considerably".

In August the Energy Savings Trust reported that two-thirds of homeowners said they wanted more advice from their estate agents about the expected costs of running a house.
