"Honest majority" pay the price for car insurance evaders

The costs caused by accidents involving drivers with no car insurance land at the feet of ordinary drivers who do pay their premiums, an expert has said.

A spokesman for the Association of British Insurers (ABI) outlined the problem faced in tackling car insurance evaders, which is being “vigorously tackled” thanks to increased police powers and automatic number plate recognition technology,

“Actions involving these [uninsured] drivers costs in excess of £500 million a year. That is a cost which is borne ultimately by the honest majority,” he said.

Historically, the detection rate of uninsured drivers has been “pretty low” and penalties are not, to some extent, proportionate to the crime, the ABI spokesman added.

More than £20 has been added to the average quoted premium for comprehensive car insurance over the three months ending June 2008, according to the AA British Insurance Premium Index.
