Holidaymakers shopping around for the best deals on their travel insurance may be interested to hear about another way in which they can save money when going on a break.

Hostelling International claims that hostels are an alternative accommodation option for people who are searching for cheaper options while on holiday.

According to Johan Kruger, head of communications and PR at the company, travelling has remained a high priority for many people despite the credit crunch and hostels provide them with a way to afford their getaways.

He said: "There are more families and even business travellers, there are hostels with conference facilities, we see them in addition to the more traditional backpackers or school groups."

Mr Kruger also claimed that the traditional image of hostelling has changed significantly.

Figures from Hostelling International recently revealed that £22.4 million worth of overnight stays were booked in hostels in 2008.
