Household are being urged to check that their home insurance policy covers the plants, shrubs and trees in their garden.
Research conducted by Marks and Spencer (M&S) reveals the average garden contains £721 worth of greenery, however many people are failing to protect their foliage.
A survey showed that 17 per cent of respondents with a garden know someone who has had plants or bushes stolen, while this figure increased to 24 per cent in the north of England.
Judith Roberts, M&S insurance manager, said: "Householders can take simple steps to reduce the risk of becoming a garden crime victim. It is also wise to check whether your home insurance policy provides cover for property in the garden."
She added that garden security levels are often very poor.
Also on the increase in the UK is the number of flower-pot robberies, with January, March, June and July being the prime months for pinching, Saga has revealed.
