Drivers should be prepared for the dark winter months to ensure they do not become a victim of theft, it is advised.
Tracker, which provides stolen vehicle recovery systems, warns that figures reveal a 20 per cent increase in recoveries of stolen vehicles during the winter months.
November, January and February are the worst months of the year for the thefts, it points out, leading to more car insurance claims.
The extra hours of darkness give criminals more time to break into cars unseen, explains Tracker managing director Bill Raynal.
They do, however, appear to take a break over Christmas, he added.
"We urge car owners not to make it easy for thieves, by taking all the right security precautions," Mr Raynal said.
"It only takes a few minutes to take these extra steps, but could save considerable heartache, not to mention expense, if their car is stolen."
Tracker urges drivers never to leave the keys in the ignition and the engine running, even if just stepping out of the car quickly to de-ice the windows.
Vehicles should be kept locked and secured at all times, with belongings preferably removed, or at least kept locked out of sight in the boot.
Documents and spare keys must not be kept inside the vehicle, the car should be kept in a garage overnight where possible and parked in busy, well-lit or attended car parks when out.
As well as doing what they can to avoid car insurance claims following theft of, or from, their vehicle, drivers must take steps to prevent accidents this winter.
RoadSafe director Adrian Walsh urges motorists to allow longer for journeys over the next few months and drive slower and smoother to avoid skidding.
All windows, mirrors and lights should be completely clear of snow, ice and mist before setting off to ensure you can see the road clearly and other motorists can see you, he continues.
As well as this, drivers must be aware that road conditions will affect how their car handles.
"Always leave more space between vehicles. Longer braking distances are required on slippery roads - double in the wet and up to ten times further in icy conditions," Mr Walsh concluded.
