Motorists may want to take extra care to ensure they have car insurance following statistics released by esure car insurance.
A new study has revealed that 90 per cent of high-value car thefts in 2008 involved the use of the original keys to the vehicle.
Nine out of ten of these incidents occurred when the keys were stolen directly from the owner or their home with many others being committed when the owner was close by but had left the keys in the ignition.
Gordon Hannah, head of claims at esure car insurance, said: "It is especially alarming that thieves who used to target cars directly are now resorting to the much more sinister crime of seizing keys directly from the owners or their homes by forcible means."
Motorists were recently urged by the AA not to consider fronting as a way of saving money on the car insurance.
