As Christmas approaches and the shopping season starts, esure has issued some tips to people to help ensure they do not have to make a claim on their home insurance.

The firm stresses the importance of hiding presents and suggests that they should not be placed under a tree if it can be seen from outside the house.

Disposing of rubbish carefully can also reduce the risk of theft as empty boxes can reveal to criminals what kind of expensive objects may be inside a home.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure home insurance, said that cover is important "around this time of year when thefts tend to be more targeted and the value of burglaries are higher than any other season".

Other basic security tips include closing blinds and curtains and making sure windows and doors are locked.

New research by AXA recently revealed that Brits may be lying about how much money they have to spend on Christmas presents this year, due to financial worries.
