Insurance firms 'sneaking in policy price increases'

People could find that the cost of their home or travel insurance policy is on the up as many are gradually increasing, it has been claimed.

However, Financialadvice.co.uk states that because many insurance firms have "sneaked" these changes in over the past few weeks, the increasing costs are likely to have gone unnoticed by many.

The companies have been affected by the economic downturn in the same way as any business and may depend on these price rises to supplement their premium income.

The website says: "Quite how the UK consumer will take this apparent ongoing increase in premiums remains to be seen as money becomes tighter and tighter for many of the UK population."

Research conducted by Mintel recently found that 67 per cent of people use price comparison sites to look for the cheapest cover available.

A further 61 per cent use them to search for comprehensive cover.
