Britons who own a second home or a property abroad should have no problems finding suitable home insurance, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
ABI spokesman Malcolm Tarling pointed out that there are many companies which deal specifically in insuring property abroad and added that home owners must also ensure that they are cover the full value of their home contents.
When it comes to the cost of insuring a second home, Mr Tarling said that factors such as the location and use of the property would be taken into consideration.
"It depends very much on whether the property is left unoccupied for a long time. If it's part of a guarded complex, I should imagine it's going to be cheaper than if it's on the middle of a dusty hill-top in the middle of a Greek island," he commented.
According to a recent study by Zurich, ten per cent of holiday home owners use their property just once a year and have contents worth an average of £15,200.
Mr Tarling urged those with a second home to consider the security arrangements that they currently have in place and to ensure that valuable items are not left unattended for any length of time.
