Britons do not know the safest places to keep their money when on holiday abroad, new research has revealed.
American Express found that 12 per cent of people would store cash in rucksacks or handbags which are key targets for thieves.
The research also discovered that eight million holidaymakers have had property stolen over the past five years, highlighting the need for travel insurance.
Sarah Harrison, director at American Express Travellers Cheques, had some advice for those planning a trip away.
"We encourage travellers to take what we call a mixed wallet - a combination of cash, cards and travellers cheques. travellers cheques are protected against loss or theft so if anything happens to your money, you can rest assured, as they are normally replaced within 24 hours," she said. Insurance will also cover any items left securely in hotel rooms, so it is advisable to leave belongings locked in a safe if possible. When taking out holiday insurance it should be ensured that the policy covers illness or injury, loss or theft, cancellation or cutting short a holiday, delayed or missed connections and accident liability, says the BBC.
