Knowing the limits of your DIY expertise could help to reduce the chance of having to make a home insurance claim.

People should be aware of their limitations when it comes to carrying out home improvement projects, which could reduce the chances of having to make a home insurance claim as a result of a botched job, one industry commentator has asserted.

Fiona Hodge, assistant editor of online publication DIY Week, made her remarks after the publication of figures by FindaProperty.com earlier this week.

According to the estate agent, a fifth of Britons plan to perform home improvement jobs over the bank holiday weekend and 68 per cent of these people intend to alter or rewire electrics.

Ms Hodge said: "Over the bank holidays there is a rise in accidents where people don't quite know what they are taking on. Know your limits and make sure you are prepared for the job you are doing."

Concluding, she noted that an increasing number of people are opting to hire DIY professionals to help them with home improvement projects at the moment.
