The true cost of holidaying without travel insurance has been revealed by one company.

Figures released by InsureandGo show that Brits who decided not to take out a policy last year ended up paying nearly £90 million in costs.

The most common expense was a medical problem or injury, while many had to fork out after losing their luggage.

Cancelled flights, lost or stolen money and delays in travel were also problems which ended up costing travellers dearly.

Perry Wilson, founder of InsureandGo, said: "In times like these, when money is so tight, it is even more important that people ensure they have adequate travel insurance so they don't end up badly out of pocket."

Those staying a little closer to home should also check they have the right travel insurance, as esure recently warned that even if people stay in the UK, they should still take out a policy.
